Game Oven the developer of the popular “social dancing” app “BoundenBoundendiscovered how hard it can be to port an application from iOS operating system to Android operating system. While iOS operating system takes the complexity out of fusing accelerometer, gyroscope and magnetometer data into usable information, the situation on Android operating system can be quite perplexing to any developer not familiar with advanced estimation theory and the rocket science of inertial guidance.

Android leaves it to the sensor makers to provide the underlying sensor fusion libraries and it turns out that the sensor fusion is unusable even on flagship Android-based smart phones or Android-based hardware. The Vine video clip below illustrates the problem in a nutshell, the compass on a variety of modern Android hardware can be seen pointing in wildly different directions. See Video for details!

Game Oven quoted: “Unfortunately, this has nothing to do with electromagnetic fields confusing the compass; it has everything to do with the diversity of hardware inside these devices… These are all major problems for our heavily gyroscope-precision based game. We weren’t just testing on low tier devices, by the way. Popular devices like the Samsung Galaxy S4 phones are problematic as well.”

Rocket science in your pocket

When Game Oven posted an S.O.S to the world on their blog, Xsens Xsens responded and utilized its experience in avionics; industrial motion tracking and unmanned submarines to delivered a sensor fusion library that works across all Android devices without a hitch.

The lightweight library substitutes the sensor fusion algorithms from hardware manufacturers by once again taking all sensor data into account and applying  Xsens’ own algorithms. Bounden had the library implemented within a few hours and let it do all the number crunching magic. Because of that, Bounden now works on almost all Android devices that have a gyroscope.

Here’s a clip of Bounden on Android with and without Xsens’ technology
