The compelling advantages of Direct AC Drivers (DACD) make them a superior solution for LED lighting products, as I said in my previous blog. This is especially true for our DACD solutions, which are the first in the industry to overcome flicker without impacting Power Factor (PF) or Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) performance.
But this is only part of what we offer manufacturers, as we’ve complemented our DACD solutions with a new DACD Design Tool. This is the industry’s first dedicated design tool that takes the pain out of developing DACD-based LED lighting products, and it can be downloaded for free from the Fairchild website.
The tool incorporates the comprehensive know-how that Fairchild has accumulated about LED lighting and DACDs, making it a truly powerful aid to lighting designers. With it, they can streamline the development process and get to market faster by eliminating the time consuming trial-and-error approach that requires multiple iterations until all required specs are met.
Designers simply input the basic specifications of the lighting product they’re designing – voltage range, output power and the type of LEDs – and this easy-to-use Excel doc outputs everything necessary for the design, including the number of LEDs and other specific components that will be required.
Fairchild’s DACD Design Tool streamlines LED lighting development
Errors during the inputting process are identified thanks to the tool’s built-in intelligence. This allows it to alert designers of potentially serious errors – such as when a low power DACD has been incorrectly specified for a high-power application – before parts have been ordered or the building of a prototype have begun.
The tool will also determine the energy efficiency of the design along with calculating its PF and THD scores, which are the three fundamental performance metrics that manufacturers have to meet. Additionally, the tool will compute the design’s flicker index, which is important when designing LED lighting products for commercial applications, such as offices and retail, which have much more stringent flicker requirements and command higher margins compared to consumer products.
